Bradford White Does Not Stand Behind Their Products
My experience with Bradford White has been horrible. My water heater has required repairs costing over $100 almost every year. Even though I carefully followed the maintenance procedures outline in the owner's manual, almost as soon as the warranty on the tank expired, the tank ruptured. When I called the company, their response was "too bad for you" and "it's normal to replace our water heaters after 6 years."

Ariston GL-4 is a great workhorse, had for over 6 years now!
This is a great product, the only real drawback is that with San Diego California's extremely hard water, it needs
cleaned and a new anode rod screwed in every six months - I am finally breaking down a buying a wet/vac to make the job much easier. That being said, it is perfect for my condo that has never had proper hot water to the kitchen (in 20 years time). As my condo hot water heater is common to the entire wing, I made sure when purchasing this 4 gallon water heater that I could plumb the "hot" water into the "cold" intake of the water heater, and thus boost my "hot" water coming into my kitchen to a proper temperature for my sink, dishwasher, and front-load washer. To me it is so very well worth cleaning and servicing the unit every six months to have the luxury or proper hot water in my kitchen, and to know that when the condo hot water is on the fritz, I have hot water for my sink and appliances anyway. Since this unit has a convenient on/off switch on the front, I simply turn the unit off when I leave for the day, and turn it on when I want.

Not For Everyone!
The problem with the Electric Tankless Heaters is that they have a flow sensor switch, so if your water pressure tends to fluctuate, as most all well/pump systems do, then you end up with hot/cold water, and having to constantly adjust temp. Maybe with "City Water" this wouldnt be a problem?
Also, since it only heats water when you turn on faucet, you have to wait each time you use it, so you end up wasting more water. I am wondering how much energy these tankless units actually save?

Probably would not buy this again
My conventional water heater died and I decided to go tankless since this is a second home. The price was quite a bit higher than a replacement tank heater, but since I use very little hot water it seemed like a good fit.

The first thing that I ran into was the electric requirements. This thing has four 7000W heating elements and each one requires a separate 30A 240V circuit. Since I didn't have that much room in my service panel, I had to install a 125A sub-panel. This also required pulling four 10-2 cables through the attic and into the utility room. Given the price of copper, this is not an insignificant expense. If I had it to do all over again, I might have moved the water heater closer to the service panel.

The actual pluming was pretty easy. It works just like a regular water heater with 3/4 inch inlet and outlet. The specifications say that a blowoff valve is not required, so I did not install one.

I am a little upset by the design of this thing. The pipes come in from the top and the wiring is on the side. The problem with this arrangement is that any sweating from the pipes runs down into the unit and onto the electrical wiring. I had a small leak in a connection when I first turned the water on and the water dripped down onto the circuit board in the unit. Fortunately, I didn't have the power on yet, but it did take a bit of work to dry everything out. I would have much preferred that the water connection would have been on the bottom and the electricity on the top.

When I powered the unit up, there were a number of clicks and beeps and flashing LEDs. The unit quickly settled down into a constant blinking of a single green LED. The very limited manual indicated that this was the normal operating mode. After a few small tests at the kitchen sink, I was satisfied that the unit was working, so I decided to take a shower.

Everything worked fine and the water was plenty hot enough. As a matter of fact, I will probably turn the temperature down a bit from the factory setting. One issue that I have is that when any of the four elements turn on it causes my lights to flicker slightly. This is a common problem since this also happens with any large electrical load like the heat pump or hot tub. The issue is that the elements seem to be turning on and off constantly during the shower causing a lot of flickering. This is something that I guess I will have to live with.

I only have a 200A service into my house and this is the minimum recommended for this unit. It will be interesting to see how well the power holds up when I have the heat pump, hot tub, and a shower all going at the same time. I probably ought to turn on all the burners on the stove at the same time just to really give it a shakedown.

The only other issue that I have is the apparent lack of information on this unit. I don't believe that the manufacturer has any useful web site or customer support. The manuals that come with the unit are very limited in information. With the unit powered on and idle, there are periodic relay clicks that I assume are normal, but nothing is mentioned in the manual. I am guessing that this is some sort of diagnostics, but I am not really sure.

Over all, I probably would not replace a conventional water heater with this unit again. Given the total cost and time involved, I cannot see that I will ever come close to recovering the investment. I am a technology junkie and like to try new things, so the experience is worth something I guess.

Bought this pot to replace an older Sunpentown model that finally gave out. I like that this one has 4 temperature settings, and a night light--very handy! The only thing that concerns me is that this one is made in China, while my older one was made in Japan. We'll see if it lasts...

This is a SUPER product.

Do not purchase simply for price, you will probably be disappointed.

Very "Mini" Water Heater
I wanted a mini water heater in my remodeled bathroom. After having it professionally installed, the plumber told me that he thinks the until is working, but....there is no hot water coming out of the faucet. I called the company and told them the unit clicks on but no hot water.

They told me i must use the .65 per minute water flow limiter that comes with the unit. I didn't see one when i opened the box, so i went around looking in three different places for a water limiter of .65.

Most people laughed when I told them what i wanted, saying that amount would barely wash your hands at that low of a flow rate and mixing it with cold water might make it feel instantly cool.

It seems that this unit is a waste of money. Perhaps a mini water tank would be a better purchase.

Ordered 220 V
I ordered a 220 V for the caribbean but amazone's plumber send me a 110 volt unit. So i'm not happy. The problem to send it back for the good one is bigger then the loss.

Every House Should Have One
I had this installed in May 2007 to provide hot water for my showers, dishwasher, etc. I was worried about using an electric tankless water heater, because I assumed that gas tankless would have been better. However, I didn't want to pay to run a gas line to my house, so I installed the biggest electric I could find. It is great. It provides plenty of hot water. 10 people in a row can shower and you won't run out of hot water, because you aren't relying on a tank. I never noticed a jump in my electric bill during the summer. Last winter my electric bill went up around $10, my guess is that the tankless water heater was requiring more power to heat the colder incoming water, but it's hard to be sure. Even so, it's much cheaper than what I was doing, which was an oil-fired water heater tank. People are so obsessed with their 'carbon footprint' and saving energy...so start with the basics: stop heating a tank of water 24 hours per day.

The best electric water heater
We bought a Marathon (though not with the Rheem logo) water heater about a year ago. Our water tended to eat up the metal of regular water heaters, and I did not feel like replacing my water heater every 4 years. So far it has been great, no problems. It will probably save $30 a month for most households.

We bought it through our rural electric cooperative. It was about $700 for a 55 gallon "low-boy", a shorter and fatter tank. If you are in a cooperative, or know someone who is, you might save some money by getting it through them.

Don't forget to loop the connecting metal hoses that connect the water heater to the water pipes. Make sure you get hoses long enough so you can do this. This prevents the hot water from rising into the water pipes by convection and wasting energy. Of course, insulate the hoses also. Also, don't forget to flush the drain valve (let about 2 gallons flow) every year to prevent build-up of silt.

It'll SAVE You the Cost of it in SAVINGS!
I just installed a New HIGH EFFICIENCY 40 Gallon ELECTRIC WATER HEATER in my condo. I removed the Nat. Gas unit, which ended up sending heated inside condo air up the chimney. NO chimney required with the ELECTRIC WATER HEATER! Basically 100% efficient.
In order to really make a savings out of it, I added this EH40 TIMER.

[] First thing, take the slip of paper that says " If the Load is Not a 240 volt load do not add jumpers." In High School we called this a 'double negative.' Cross out the word "Not" and "do not" it will then read : "If the Load is 240 volt add jumpers."
IF you buy a 240 volt water heater you WILL HAVE TO ADD JUMPERS!! Problem is, the jumpers they supply are TOO SHORT to stretch to the screws #1 & #5. So clip a piece of your install wire and make your own jumper.

[] This unit requires a AA Alkaline Battery, it says it will last "3 years" so keep that in mind.

[] The time setting is a slight bit complicated, but I only needed it on & off for the same time EVERY DAY. Click the button, and all 7 days are allowed to be set at once. Keep in mind you will need to wear your reading glasses as the LCD display has some VERY fine print.

[] Once jumpers are installed, (and line and load wires) and you set the switch to "Run" it is ready to go. With my Bradford White High Efficiency ELECTRIC 240 Volt water heater ( two 4500 watt heater elements, all works great!)

[] Intermatic and Tork are pretty much the only sellers for water heater timers. Tork is hard to find anywhere on the Internet to buy, and Intermatic is out there for sale alot. THIS Intermatic Unit is digital, SUPER QUIET unlike the electric motor timers on all other water heater timers. The motor type timers WILL eventually make a not so quiet motor spinning noise, and a click as they turn On & Off. THIS DIGITAL EH40 unit is perfectly quiet. IF you don't add the Jumpers as needed, it will NOT function. So if you have a 240 Volt Water Heater with two hot line wires (usually red & black) you will need to add the jumpers - see chart with instructions - and save the chart somewhere.

[] All in all the price of this unit is nothing to what you will SAVE in electrical use from the timer. I set my timer for "ON" at 8am & "OFF" at 9am. I have enough hot water for a days use using the water heater only ON for One Hour a day!!

[] Keep in mind the average shower uses 20 gallons of water

Bradford White Does Not Stand Behind Their Products
I'm not surprised that Mr. Williams has had problems. My experience with Bradford White is the same. My water heater has required repairs costing over $100 almost every year. Even though I carefully followed the maintenance procedures outline in the owner's manual, almost as soon as the warranty on the tank expired, the tank ruptured. When I called the company, their response was "too bad for you."

poor warranty.....never this brand again
We had a new Bradford White hot water heater installed 4 years ago. The thermostat died and had to be replaced for a cost of about $175. This was not covered in the warranty. Why pretend to have a warranty, when, uh, the main event doesn't count?. Unreliable, poor quality, not a good company to do business with. Just say no.

I love it
When our hot water heater went out I began gathering information on water heaters. Because I am on a well and live in a draught stricken area watching 4 gal. of water go down the kitchen drain every time I needed hot water was nerve racking. I was considering putting the new water heater on the back porch closer to the kitchen and redoing the plumbing. Then I saw this little gem. It is the only one I saw that you could install in line with your house hot water. My daughter had the same problem so I bought 2. It wash't bad to hook up. Our biggest problem was pulling out our dishwasher so my husband could change something and give me a plug in for it. We both love them. Turn the knob, hot water. The fact that it is in line with my big water heater I thought was a real plus and no one had to change around any plumbing or look at a water heater on the back porch.

Nice water heater
Overall, this product works very well and we love not having to wait for hot water at the kitchen sink. The form-factor is also very convenient for mounting under the kitchen sink, unlike some other small point-of-use water heaters.

I have this hooked up inline with a gas tankless water heater and I wanted to know how much this new heater was costing me in electricity, so I hooked up a meter to check it out for a few weeks. It turns out that, with our normal usage, it uses just about 5 KWH/week - which works out to about $2/month in our area.

Before this heater, we had to run a full 2 gallons of water down the drain before getting hot water to the sink - which was both a big pain and somewhat wasteful. With this 4 gallon heater, we basically have an instant and endless supply of hot water at the sink since the hot water from the main tankless unit arrives before the water cools too noticeably. I've also noticed that it seems to heat water on it's own very quickly.

The biggest problem with this water heater is how much of a pain it is to set the thermostat. You basically have to remove 3 panels and then turn a dial that isn't labeled at all. In order to get it set to the same temperature as my main water heater, I ended up using an instant-read thermometer and moving the thermostat dial as I filled the tank with cold water and let it reheat it to the set temp. The process took a while, but I shouldn't have to do that again.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the purchase and would recommend this water heater.

Hot Product
The heater does a great job of providing hot water immediately at the kitchen sink which is at the opposite end of the house from the water heater---no more wasting 2-3 gallons waiting for hot water. Installation was easy using flexible connections from the local hardware store, letting the heater simply sit on the floor under the sink. The heater even came with the pressure relief valve mounted. We are very happy with the performance of the heater.

Works Great.
I got tired of replacing water tanks and decided to go tankless. I spent a lot of time researching this item and installed it myself. It worked great from the very first turn-on. I thought the unit was well engineered from the moment I received it.
I'm able to run 2 showers with shower heads that put out 2.5 GPM each. If you want to compare inlet water temps, I live in North Texas.
I never measured the exact temperature of the water but I know the temperature adjustment works just fine because I've adjusted it a couple of times. Specifically to increase the temp for the Kitchen sink.

bad machine(s)
After much consideration, and after exchanging 2 new units via Stiebel-Eltron customer service, I conclude that there is a basic design flaw in this water heater. The water heater does not perform according to the Stiebel-Eltron specifications. In the first 2 units I had, the delivered water temperature at a single faucet was always 8-10 degrees below the temperature set at the unit. In the 3rd unit, the temperature is maintained, but only for 6-7 minutes, after which it drops consistently and considerably. It is not a problem with my particular installation, believe me I spent many hours trying to eliminate any possibility that what I had done with the plumbing and electrical service to the unit was at fault. And what is true for this model is probably true for all of the other models as well.
Given my experiences, I can't imagine anyone giving this product a good rating. The only other review I have read of this model reports very similar things to what I've experienced.
I spent $600 on the unit, another $500 on installation, and ALOT of time trouble-shooting, all to get an unreliable product. I'd never buy anything from them again!

NOT a whole house water heater!!!
Firstly let me say that this water heater is not appropriate for whole house use. It works fairly well with a faucet application but I was never able to get the water hot enough for a bath or shower at a normal gpm rate of 2-4 gallons. And I had three-yes that's right 3 of them. They all failed. I purchased this hot water heater online last August after much research and saw no negative reviews. The price was better than the comparable Bosch that my inlaws had installed and have been using with no problems. Each and every time a unit failed I dealt directly with Stiebel Eltron customer service reps at the home office in Massachusetts and they coached my installer and myself through multiple troubleshooting/pulling apart exercises to try to solve the problems over the phone. They had to send out a new unit twice during which time I had no hot water during the transit times, not to mention already having not had any hot water due to failure. If you do decide to order one of these units and use it as your whole house water heater consider getting a membership to a gym or befriending neighbors so that you will be able to take showers when it fails you, too.

i bought this to replace the broken water unit in my oil furnace. i must admit i am no good at intstalling anything myself so i had to hire someone to do it for me. finding one company to install the whole thing was a real pain in the butt. i had to find a electrician to run the wires and install the 3 50 amp breakers. then i had to get a full service plumber to install the piping. i used lucas plumbing. they did a very good job. as for the unit itself. i really love it it works just as you would expect. i have not had a chance to use the unit in the winter. i i had it installed in the summer and i live in pennslyvania. the cold incoming water temp in temp in the summer is 75 degrees and about 40 in the middle of the winter. i will post again in the winter to let everyone know how well in works with very gold water coming in. i would definitly recommend the unit to anyone i really like it. just one very important warning!!! you must measure the water flow on all your faucets to make sure you get at least .87 gallons per minute. if you dont you will have no hot water on that faucet until you turn on a second faucet because the unit has a .87 gpm minimum turn on flow through it for it to turn on. check the flow rate during the day time between 1pm to 6pm. that seems to be when the pressure is the lowest. i checked all my faucets at 9pm before i bought it and they all filled a 1 gallon jug in under a minute however. i didnt know the flow was slower during the middle of the day. so. it turned out my faucet in the kitchen was clogged and had a bad valve and had to be replaced. now the new faucet works fine and i measure almost twice as much water coming out of it per minute, anyway so far i really like the unit. i think its awesome. i will get back to this review in the winter to give you the update .
